Welcome to Your Next Step. Our non-profit organization was founded by Sonia Bhagwan in 2009 to address the needs of an underrepresented group of Oregonians: the working poor.  Bhagwan, a single mother, has volunteered and helped families since 1992 through working with chronically homeless families, survivors of domestic violence, at-risk youth and recovering addicts/alcoholics. Bhagwan noticed that there were severely limited resources available for working Oregon residents on the brink of crisis. For some, that crisis might be an unexpectedly large bill after a layoff. For others, the struggle to participate in daily life after a medical crisis.

At Your Next Step we help hard-working Oregonians who are faced with these difficult situations. We provide small, one-time grants to "bridge the gap" for our clients so they can regain their footing. We don’t pay these grants to individuals; rather, we distribute the money directly to the creditors and merchants (i.e. utility company, landlord, auto insurance co, etc) on behalf of eligible clients to pay their bill and restore the individual to financial independence and self-sufficiency.

Our approach is unique. We are the only agency in the Pacific NW helping working citizens in this capacity. We aim to stop the cycle of poverty before it starts by making a payment for people that will keep them from entering that cycle.

We are passionate about our mission and our work is entirely carried out by a voluteer Board of Directors, who receive no compensation.
